Background :

Abhay Mangaldas has taken charge as the Honorary German Consul in Ahmedabad. He said his primary focus will be on education and skill development, particularly for students from economically weaker backgrounds, to strengthen ties between India and Germany.

Mangaldas said teaching the German language to young students can open employment doors with German companies, both in India and in Germany. He added that starting language learning at an early age makes the process easier and more effective. He also pointed to vocational training programmes run in collaboration with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce as a practical path to real career opportunities.

Beyond trade and business, he said, cultural exchanges and delegation visits will play a key role in bringing people from both countries closer together.

Consul General of Germany in Mumbai, Christoph Hallier, called the appointment a new chapter for Germany in Gujarat. He said the Honorary Consul will serve as a focal point for expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, culture, and business. Hallier noted that the Gujarat government has welcomed this development, which will work alongside existing German institutions such as the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce and the Max Muller Bhavan Institute.

Hallier also said India and Germany remain strong and reliable partners, especially in uncertain global times. He pointed to the EU-India Free Trade Agreement, signed in New Delhi in the third week of January, as a clear signal of commitment from both sides. He added that Prime Minister Modi’s reception of Chancellor Merz in Ahmedabad earlier this year reflected the deep trust between the two nations.
