Background :
OpenAI has launched the Learning Accelerator, a program focused on India to expand the use of artificial intelligence in education. It introduced this initiative before the India AI Action Summit 2026 and aims it at students, teachers, and academic institutions.
India has emerged as the largest market for student use of ChatGPT, with millions using the platform for homework, exam preparation, and idea generation. OpenAI said the new programme aims to ensure that AI supports deeper learning rather than replacing critical thinking.
The company is working with key partners, including the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, the All India Council for Technical Education, the Ministry of Education and ARISE schools. The initiative will focus on research, improving access to AI tools, delivering training, and deploying new learning solutions.
As part of the collaboration, OpenAI will give $500,000 to IIT Madras to study how AI can improve teaching methods and student outcomes. The research will also draw on insights from cognitive neuroscience to better understand learning behaviour.
Over the next six months, the company plans to distribute around 500,000 ChatGPT licences to students and teachers through its partner network. It will also provide training programs to improve AI literacy and promote responsible use of AI.
The initiative introduces ChatGPT Study Mode, a feature designed to act as a personalised tutor. It guides students through step-by-step explanations and interactive questioning to support understanding.
OpenAI has strengthened its regional leadership by appointing Raghav Gupta as Head of Education for India and Asia Pacific. The company is expanding in India. It plans to open its first office in New Delhi and offer affordable subscription plans and support for local languages.
