Key Background:

In a significant move ahead of the state’s local body elections, the cabinet on Tuesday approved a comprehensive scheme to restore and preserve educational institutions and hostel buildings established by Dr B R Ambedkar under the People’s Education Society. The government has sanctioned Rs 500 crore for the initiative, to be implemented over the next five years.

The scheme honors Dr Ambedkar’s contributions to education and social progress. It will restore nine schools and two hostels he established, making sure they continue to benefit students for years to come.

Dr B R Ambedkar founded the People’s Education Society in 1945 with the goal of promoting education among communities that had limited access to learning opportunities at the time.

Under this initiative, several prominent institutions were established over the decades. Among them are Siddharth Arts and Science College and Siddharth Night High School in Mumbai in 1946, Milind Arts College and Milind Science College in Sambhajinagar in 1950, and Milind Multipurpose High School along with Milind Pre-Primary English School in 1955.

Milind College was set up in 1956, while Siddharth Commerce and Economics College (1953) and Siddharth Law College (1956) were also established in Mumbai. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Commerce and Economics College in Wadala shows Ambedkar’s idea of education for everyone.

The restoration program will fix the buildings, improve facilities, and make a better place for students to learn. Officials said the scheme not only honors Ambedkar’s legacy but also shows the government’s commitment to quality education and social development.

Education experts welcomed the plan, saying it will improve these historic schools and inspire future students. With the cabinet’s approval, the institutions will continue to follow Ambedkar’s vision of education for all.

With this investment, the government honors Dr Ambedkar while upgrading education and facilities in these important schools and colleges.
