Background

More than 60% of higher education institutions (HEIs) in India now allow students to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools, according to a new report by Ernst and Young-Parthenon in partnership with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

The report, Future-Ready Campuses: Unlocking the Power of AI in Higher Education, comes from a survey of 30 top colleges and universities in India. It indicates that 53% of institutions are using AI to generate learning content, and 40% have chatbots and tutoring systems that operate using AI. Approximately 39% utilize adaptive learning platforms, and 38% use AI in automatic grading.

More than half of the colleges (56%) have introduced rules and policies for using AI. The report says AI is changing how courses are taught, how students are assessed, and how classrooms engage learners. AI tools are also being used for checking plagiarism, helping students learn at their own pace, and giving career guidance.

The report also warns about data safety. AI platforms access student information, if not handled properly, it can cause privacy problems or even legal trouble. It suggests that colleges should have clear rules, contracts with AI providers, and strong systems to protect data.

It also recommends teaching AI basics to all students. Everyone should learn simple AI concepts, digital skills, and ethics. For students in science and technology, colleges should include advanced topics like machine learning, robotics, and natural language processing.

The report shows that Indian colleges are slowly embracing AI, balancing new technology with safety, and preparing students for a future where AI will play a big role.
