Background

OP Jindal Global University (JGU) has announced the launch of five new Short-Term Study Abroad Programmes (ST-SAPs) in Japan for Summer 2026, marking a major expansion of its international academic footprint. The university said the programmes form one of the largest Japan-focused student mobility initiatives undertaken by any Indian institution.

Running between 15 June and early July 2026, the programmes will be hosted across five Japanese universities. Each course has a distinct academic focus: the University of Tokyo will offer a programme on “Japan in a Globalized World,” while Chuo University will run a course on law, economics, and society under the theme “Global Japan.” The University of Yamanashi will explore “AI and Humanities: Applications in SDGs,” Kyorin University will examine Japan’s heritage and modern development, and Musashi University will host a programme with details to be announced.

The offerings include coursework, field visits, and cultural immersion activities aimed at giving students firsthand exposure to Japan’s governance systems, technological landscape, academic culture, and societal trends.

JGU said the new programmes build on a decade of growing India–Japan cooperation in education, culture, and technology. The Japan–India Joint Vision for the Next Decade, signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in August 2025, placed strong emphasis on youth exchanges and academic partnerships, creating opportunities for Indian universities to expand links with Japanese institutions.

The university currently maintains more than 25 partnerships in Japan, including collaborations with the University of Tokyo, United Nations University, Chuo University, Doshisha University, Ritsumeikan University, Hiroshima University, and others. JGU’s first major Japan-focused study abroad programme took place in 2025 with Temple University Japan, sending 40 students to Tokyo.

With the 2026 expansion, JGU plans to strengthen its role in promoting India–Japan academic ties and providing Indian students with more global learning opportunities.
