Background

India has achieved its best performance in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject, which now includes more Indian universities than ever before that rank in the global top 50. The rankings released by London-based QS Quacquarelli Symonds show that India is making progress toward establishing itself as a major educational hub in the world.

According to the report, India now has 27 entries in the top 50 across different subjects. The number of entries has increased to 26, which is double the 12 entries that were recorded in 2024. A total of 12 Indian institutions contributed to this rise.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) led this growth, with several campuses securing top positions in engineering and technical subjects. The IITs, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and BITS Pilani achieved the recognition of being among the top 50 worldwide academic institutions across multiple fields of study.

IIT Dhanbad and IIM Ahmedabad achieved top performance as both institutions received global recognition by ranking 21st in their respective fields. IIT Dhanbad achieved excellent results in mineral and mining engineering. IIM Ahmedabad maintained its position as one of the leading business schools in the world and entered the marketing rankings for the first time.

IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras also made it to the top 50, showing that more Indian institutes are doing well globally.

The results show that India’s universities are getting better and earning more recognition worldwide, particularly in engineering and management fields.
